How a journey of a lifetime changed my destiny
Connecting the world in 2026 – as we step into this new year, it’s the perfect time for reflection and setting intentions to make a positive change in the world, starting with our children.
The challenges kids face today can seem overwhelming. It’s vital to offer them life tools to navigate these difficulties with resilience and peace. Over the past 23 years, I’ve had the honour of training people from all walks of life, around the globe, to teach meditation to children.
This journey has been transformative for those who have joined me – and on a personal basis too.
I was reflecting on a trip I took, 12 years ago, to New Zealand and Australia and which brought these teachings to new depths. In many ways, it felt like a turning point.
My first trip to Australia, in 1997, was shadowed by deep grief, having just lost my mother. At the time, I was only 28, and the pain of her sudden passing was very raw. Returning to Australia on my 2nd trip was a moment of healing and growth. This time, I was there with my husband, and the journey allowed me to make new, positive memories while also coming to terms with old wounds of the past – it was my meditation and energy training that helped me navigate this.
Meditation and the Power of the Land
One of the most profound moments during my time in Australia was our visit to U
luru.
It’s difficult to describe the energy of this sacred place, but there’s something undeniably powerful about it.
Before even setting foot there, I could feel its influence as I led a group of adults on my Connected Kids program in Adelaide. The energy we tapped into shifted our Connected Kids course from a “lovely course” to a deeply transformative, healing experience. The connections we formed were so strong, it felt as though we had moved mountains together.
This moment helped me realise something fundamental: teaching children meditation is not just a nice idea—it is essential.
It is essential for their emotional wellbeing, for the health of our communities, and for the future of our planet. The world needs children who are grounded, compassionate and equipped with the tools to process life challenges with kindness and self-care.
A Passion for Peace
Since my visit to Uluru, I’ve felt an even deeper sense of passion. Meditation is more than a practice; it is a way to nurture inner peace, both for ourselves and for future generations. The more we invest in teaching children to meditate, the more we invest in a future that values connection, empathy, and the planet.
For me, meditation has been a cornerstone of healing, especially in dealing with grief. It has allowed me to navigate and accept the loss of my mum with greater self-kindness and compassion than I ever thought possible. It’s been 30 years since her passing, and meditation has helped me process the waves of grief, offering me comfort and perspective in moments when I might otherwise have felt overwhelmed.
Where does your passion take you?
If you work with children (toddlers to teens) —whether as an educator, a therapist, or in any other capacity—this is the perfect time to complement your career with the skills we teach on the Connected Kids courses.
Imagine the impact you could have, providing children with a tool to navigate life’s challenges in a healthier way.
Meditation can help children manage stress, build emotional intelligence, and foster a sense of safety and empowerment. And for those working with children who have experienced trauma, incorporating mindful practices into your approach can be life-changing – as a foster parent for 10 years, I can verify this. Meditation can help them feel grounded, safe, and in control of their emotions.
