Here\u2019s a simple mindful activity we developed that toddlers can enjoy (or adapt to children with additional needs with short attention spans).<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"12n4szg\" data-start=\"630\" data-end=\"680\">The Therapeutic Power of Playful Mindfulness<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"682\" data-end=\"927\">Introducing toddlers to mindfulness through a mindful &#8216;game&#8217; helps them develop <strong data-start=\"751\" data-end=\"802\">focus, self-regulation, and emotional awareness<\/strong>. At this age, these skills aren&#8217;t fully developed but they are forming the foundation for emotional resilience later in life. Engaging them in playful meditation, supports:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"929\" data-end=\"1151\">\n<li data-section-id=\"itto61\" data-start=\"929\" data-end=\"972\">\n<p data-start=\"931\" data-end=\"972\">attention and concentration<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1o6egp\" data-start=\"973\" data-end=\"1014\">\n<p data-start=\"975\" data-end=\"1014\">early emotional regulation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1q15zm7\" data-start=\"1015\" data-end=\"1077\">\n<p data-start=\"1017\" data-end=\"1077\">an outlet for their energy in a safe and structured way<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"8rffw5\" data-start=\"1078\" data-end=\"1151\">\n<p data-start=\"1080\" data-end=\"1151\">social interaction and imitation skills when in group practice<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1153\" data-end=\"1276\">Teaching toddlers meditation isn&#8217;t just about calm\u2014it\u2019s about giving children tools to manage their bodies, energy, and emotions from an early age.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1153\" data-end=\"1276\"><div class='widescreen divider plain'><\/div>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1jhcbd7\" data-start=\"1283\" data-end=\"1313\">Step 1: Focus &#8211; Peek-a-Boo<\/h3>\n<ol data-start=\"1315\" data-end=\"1653\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1mzmz5v\" data-start=\"1315\" data-end=\"1426\">\n<p data-start=\"1318\" data-end=\"1426\">Invite your child to sit in front of you in a way that&#8217;s comfortable for them on the floor\/chair with feet touching ground.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1mzmz5v\" data-start=\"1315\" data-end=\"1426\">\n<p data-start=\"1318\" data-end=\"1426\">Now, hold a piece of paper (or lightweight fabric) in front of your face, with only your eyes peeking above it.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1un6im9\" data-start=\"1539\" data-end=\"1653\">\n<p data-start=\"1542\" data-end=\"1653\">Hide behind the paper, then peek and say, \u201cBoo!\u201d Repeat by peeking from the side, under, and around the paper.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"1655\" data-end=\"1954\"><strong data-start=\"1655\" data-end=\"1672\">Why it works:<\/strong> Eye movement is an integral development in children that supports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S136466132030303X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healthy brain development<\/a>. The playful element of this practice engages their *<strong data-start=\"1709\" data-end=\"1736\">sacral chakra<\/strong>, and their posture helps them support the *<strong>root energy centre<\/strong>, helping children feel grounded.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a practice that also supports their social interaction skills and strengthens attention and the ability to focus on a single object or action\u2014a vital foundation for later meditation practice.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1655\" data-end=\"1954\"><div class='widescreen divider plain'><\/div>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"zvxclg\" data-start=\"1961\" data-end=\"1984\">Step 2: Hand Peek<\/h3>\n<ol data-start=\"1986\" data-end=\"2196\">\n<li data-section-id=\"5nco06\" data-start=\"1986\" data-end=\"2110\">\n<p data-start=\"1989\" data-end=\"2110\">Place the paper down and hold your hands in front of your face, palms out, to hide yourself. Repeat the \u201cBoo\u201d exercise.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1xnmaff\" data-start=\"2111\" data-end=\"2196\">\n<p data-start=\"2114\" data-end=\"2196\">Invite your child to copy you, peeking from behind their hands and saying \u201cBoo!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"2198\" data-end=\"2351\">As children take the lead in choosing how to peek, they begin <strong data-start=\"2260\" data-end=\"2301\">practising decision-making and agency<\/strong>, which boosts confidence and emotional balance.\u00a0 This practice may also make them (and you) giggle. This can become part of the mindful practise &#8211;\u00a0 feeling the &#8216;giggle&#8217; in the body, hearing the sound of it which helps children notice body sensations (important for later development to detect stress indicators or for self regulation skills). Plus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/informationsupport\/heart-matters-magazine\/wellbeing\/how-joy-affects-health#:~:text=Get%20support%20with%20your%20health,expanded%20to%20help%20heart%20patients.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">giggling releases feel good chemicals<\/a> into the bloodstream which are natural painkillers and boost mood.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2198\" data-end=\"2351\"><div class='widescreen divider plain'><\/div>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1mu4a6f\" data-start=\"2358\" data-end=\"2395\">Step 3: \u201cShhhh\u201d Sound Awareness<\/h3>\n<ol data-start=\"2397\" data-end=\"2847\">\n<li data-section-id=\"os2xp1\" data-start=\"2397\" data-end=\"2532\">\n<p data-start=\"2400\" data-end=\"2532\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13196\" src=\"https:\/\/teachchildrenmeditation.com\/files\/2023\/03\/shutterstock_1543114073-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"self soothe mindfully for kids and teens girl holding her heart\" width=\"248\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachchildrenmeditation.com\/files\/2023\/03\/shutterstock_1543114073-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/teachchildrenmeditation.com\/files\/2023\/03\/shutterstock_1543114073-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/teachchildrenmeditation.com\/files\/2023\/03\/shutterstock_1543114073-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/teachchildrenmeditation.com\/files\/2023\/03\/shutterstock_1543114073-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/teachchildrenmeditation.com\/files\/2023\/03\/shutterstock_1543114073.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 248px) 100vw, 248px\" \/>Ask your child to bring their palms onto their chest \u2014this connects them to their *heart centre.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"100qc2l\" data-start=\"2533\" data-end=\"2633\">\n<p data-start=\"2536\" data-end=\"2633\">Encourage them to make a \u201cShhhh\u201d sound, gradually louder and then softer. Repeat several times.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"f929db\" data-start=\"2634\" data-end=\"2738\">\n<p data-start=\"2637\" data-end=\"2738\">After the softest \u201cShhhh,\u201d invite them to sit in silence for a few moments (2 breaths), noticing the stillness.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"14c3xb4\" data-start=\"2739\" data-end=\"2847\">\n<p data-start=\"2742\" data-end=\"2847\">Next, ask them to make the sound and <strong data-start=\"2779\" data-end=\"2819\">feel it vibrating through their body<\/strong>, louder and softer again.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"2849\" data-end=\"3147\"><strong data-start=\"2849\" data-end=\"2874\">Therapeutic benefits:<\/strong> This exercise strengthens the *<strong data-start=\"2905\" data-end=\"2922\">throat chakra<\/strong>, improving communication and self-expression, and also connects to the *heart centre. Children also learn to regulate their breath and connect to their body senses which increases self-awareness.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2849\" data-end=\"3147\"><div class='widescreen divider plain'><\/div>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1epg29e\" data-start=\"3154\" data-end=\"3190\">Step 4: Exploring Other Sounds<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3192\" data-end=\"3318\">You can repeat Step 3 with different sounds, such as \u201cAhhhh\u201d or \u201cMmmmm.\u201d You might let a child choose a sound for the group.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3320\" data-end=\"3350\">This playful sound practice:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3352\" data-end=\"3523\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1pevwbr\" data-start=\"3352\" data-end=\"3388\">\n<p data-start=\"3354\" data-end=\"3388\">Encourages <strong data-start=\"3365\" data-end=\"3386\">emotional release &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>if the child has been unhappy or sad\/angry, making the sound and attaching it to the breath\/sound can help them release it.\u00a0 This works energetically through the *throat chakra.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"18olkmn\" data-start=\"3389\" data-end=\"3441\">Helps children feel more centred, calm, and in learning to engage in control of their voice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The &#8216;mmmm&#8217; sound activates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/gb\/blog\/the-compassionate-brain\/202410\/the-power-of-humming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vagus nerve<\/a> which has a powerful influence on the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest).\u00a0 The &#8216;ahhhh&#8217; sound activates the *heart chakra which is key energy centre calming the nervous system and supporting emotional wellbeing.<\/p>\n<div class='widescreen divider plain'><\/div>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"158i3g5\" data-start=\"3530\" data-end=\"3550\">Why Play is Important for Mindful Meditation for Toddlers<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3552\" data-end=\"3738\">Toddlers may struggle to be still, but this type of <strong data-start=\"3606\" data-end=\"3682\">playful meditation lays the foundation for lifelong emotional resilience<\/strong>.
